Thomas Nast (1840 – 1902) was an American editorial cartoonist (born in Germany). He was the creator of the modern Santa Claus image and the GOP logo of the elephant for the Republican Party. The general belief states that he was the creator of Uncle Sam and Columbia. He used those symbols but did not create them.
