Due to him discovering a separate island then America. He wanted to make a trademark with the Indians, but instead he saw Native Americans instead. So, he decided to adapt to the situation and start to trade with the Native Americans since he thought they were Indians from India.
Columbus's first act upon arriving on the Caribbean island he had just discovered, which was a separate island from America. He initially did want to make a trademark with the Indians, but as he saw Native Americans he change his mind and try to to adapt and he began to trade with the Native Americans.
Note that when he first landed on his first voyage, Columbus thought that he had found it in Cuba, but he later convinced himself by November that Cuba was the Cathay mainland even though he had no evidence to suppport his claims
