Multicellular organisms have very complex body systems. They carry many different tasks. They have to move, find food, excrete, maintain balance within their body system and the environment etc.
- To perform these tasks, cells must have specific functions because they would be in need of different materials to carryout the functions.
A unicellular organism performs very simple functions of life. They do not require complex biological processes to manufacture their food and carry out life activities.
Cell specialization occurs in large multicellular organisms but not in small unicellular organisms because multicellular organisms have numerous cells but unicellular cells have only one cell.

- Cell specialization is a phenomenon in living organisms in which different cells perform different and specific functions for the organism that contains them.
- Cell specialization strictly occurs in multicellular organisms i.e. organisms that possess more than one cell. This is because there are numerous cells to carry out specific tasks.
- On the other hand, in a unicellular organism i.e. organism that contain only one cell, cell specialization cannot occur.
- Therefore, cell specialization occurs in large multicellular organisms but not in small unicellular organisms because multicellular organisms have numerous cells but unicellular cells have only one cell.
