5+x+(−2)=−8
Simplify
5 + x - 2 = -8
x + 3 = -8
Subtract 3 to both sides
x + 3 - 3 = -8 +3
Simplify
x = -5

This is simple, move the numbers to the other side and change the signs when doing so, x = -8 - 5 - 2 which gives you x = -15
