The school buses lined up like tanks on the battlefield. Obviously the school buses are not tanks and the school is not a battlefield. But in this occasion, the metaphor is used to describe the school as a battlefield, in that there are police forces keeping the angry people from attacking the black students, who are entering the buses to be taken home.
