Based on the number, epithelial tissues are classified as:
- Simple epithelial cells - made up of single cell layer.
- Stratified epithelial cells- made up of multiple cell layers.
Based on their shape, epithelial tissues are further classified into:
- Simple squamous and stratified squamous epithelial cells
- Simple columnar and stratified columnar epithelial cells
- Simple cuboidal cells
- Ciliated columnar and pseudostratified columnar epithelial cells
- Transitional epithelial cells.
Therefore, epithelial tissues are important in protecting the internal and external body organs.
