He teaches her to stand up for herself, and if the jacket is a reward then she shouldn't have to pay. Marta's grandfather is an illiterate person but he is a man of principle. He has a sublime and elevated personality. He is straightforward and hardworking man and that's why he refused to give money to Marta for the Scholarship Jacket because he knew that it must be free.
