The very name Byzantine serves as an example of the misconceptions that the history of the empire has frequently been subject to, as its inhabitants would hardly have thought the term applied to them or to their state. They believed that theirs was the Roman Empire, which had been established by God's grace just before the start of the Christian period to unite his people in anticipation of the arrival of his Son.
