What is Mitosis?
Two genetically identical daughter cells are created during mitosis, along with the original cell. A diploid cell has 2X DNA and 2N chromosomes at birth. The cells are still genetically diploid (2N chromosomal number) after DNA replication, but they contain 4X as much DNA because each chromosome has done so. A united pair of identical sister chromatids make up each chromosome today. Two identical cells with 2N chromosomes and 2X DNA each emerge from mitosis.
- Chromosomes condense during prophase; each chromosome is made up of two identical sister chromatids that are linked at the centromere.
- In the metaphase, the spindle apparatus' microtubules push and tug the chromosomes into alignment along the plane of cell division in the center of the cell.
- Chromatids start to decondense and congregate at the opposing ends of the cell during telophase.
