With regards to the history of colonization, by the beginning of World War I, about how much of the world's population lived in a European colony?

I believe it was at this one point that roughly half of the world was under Britain's imperial rule. That is why England was called the country where the "sun never set." 

The answer is one third i just took the test and got it correct:)
