A tree gets its mass mostly from carbon dioxide. This is because the tree uses carbon dioxide as energy and uses it to grow.

Without the soil the tree can't grow.
Same goes for carbon dioxide.
The soil is a important part in growing a tree  because its basically the foundation.
 As carbon dioxide just gives it its energy.
